EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT

EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT PLAN

To ensure that everyone is prepared for an emergency situation such as fire or flood, the Glamorgan Spring Bay Emergency Management Plan has been developed for the entire municipal area.  This plan is reviewed, managed and administered by the Municipal Emergency Management Committee.  It is reviewed regularly to ensure compatibility with regional and state arrangements.

The Plan is available at Glamorgan Spring Bay Council Municipal Emergency Management Plan

Council encourages residents to undertake their own emergency planning. Be pro-active, and talk to your family and friends about being prepared and staying safe in the event of a disaster. By working together, we build a stronger community and become more resilient to disasters.

The Australian Warning System (AWS) is a new national approach to information and warnings for hazards like bushfire, flood, storm, cyclone, extreme heat and severe weather.

It aims to deliver a more consistent approach to emergency warnings.  It uses a nationally consistent set of icons to show incidents on websites and apps.

There are three warning levels:-

Advice:  An incident has started.  There is no immediate danger.  Stay up to date in case the situation changes

Watch and Act:  There is a heightened level of threat.  Conditions are changing and you need to start taking action now to protect you and your family.

Emergency Warning:  An Emergency Warning is the highest level of warning.  You may be in danger and need to take action immediately.  Any delay now puts your life at risk.

Until now there have been different warning systems for different hazard types across Australia.  The new AWS aims to provide consistent warning to Australian communities so that people know what to do when they see a warning level.

ADVICE ON EVACUATION – the COVID-safe way

Do you have a plan for what you’ll do if you need to evacuate in the event of an emergency?

As the threat of COVID will be with us for some time, we all need to prepare a little differently to stay COVID-safe in the event of other emergencies that may impact us and our communities.

Coordinating an evacuation during the pandemic carries extra risks of close physical contact and person-to-person transmission of the virus, not only to those evacuating but also to emergency services personnel and evacuation centre volunteers.

Now is the time to review your personal bushfire or emergency plans and identify somewhere safe to go if you need to leave your home and evacuate to a safe place. Ask friends or relatives outside your area if you would be able to stay with them.

Think about when to leave and have a plan for when you’ll go and what you’ll take with you, and remember to encourage your neighbours, friends and family to do the same. And don’t forget to pack some masks or face coverings and hand sanitiser in your emergency kit, just in case.

This toolkit contains resources to help and support adults and children before, during, and after a disaster or traumatic event. It will help you understand some of the impacts of disaster and how you can help lessen these impacts.

Emergencies and disasters are extremely stressful and it is normal to feel overwhelmed. Children, even infants, can also be affected. They depend on the adults around them for safety and security, and will need reassurance, care, and opportunities to share their feelings. These resources provide a starting point for you to help children navigate the different stages of a disaster.
