Relocation assistance may be available for the right candidate
Glamorgan Spring Bay Council is looking for an experienced and people-focused Health, Safety & Wellbeing Officer to help us continue building a positive, practical and proactive approach to workplace safety and wellbeing.
This is a broad and influential role working across all areas of Council; from outdoor works crews and operational teams through to office-based employees, managers and our Executive Leadership Team. The position provides advice and support across WHS systems and compliance, risk and incident management, workers compensation, injury management, return to work, employee wellbeing; all contributing to our organisational wellness and safety culture.
We’re looking for more than technical expertise
Naturally, you’ll need strong WHS knowledge and practical experience. But just as importantly, we’re looking for someone who is good with people.
You’ll be someone who can walk into a room, listen, understand what is happening and bring a calm and steady approach. You’ll be comfortable talking with people at every level of an organisation and able to build trust and credibility without losing sight of the standards that need to be met.
You understand that creating a safe workplace isn’t just about policies, procedures, and compliance. It’s about influencing behaviour, having the right conversations, and helping people understand WHY safety matters.
We’re looking for someone who can:
- build genuine and respectful working relationships across a diverse workforce;
- positively influence safe behaviours and encourage people to take ownership of safety;
- remain calm, practical and considered when situations are challenging;
- communicate confidently with outdoor crews, office staff, managers and senior leaders;
- provide advice in a way that is clear, balanced and solutions-focused; and
- help create an environment where people feel comfortable raising concerns, asking questions and contributing to safer ways of working.
The role has a strong focus on promoting safe behaviours, psychological safety, employee wellbeing and continuous improvement, while also providing specialist advice and identifying practical solutions to emerging risks.
About you
You will have a minimum Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety, or an equivalent relevant qualification, together with demonstrated experience in a WHS role. Experience in an operational or higher-risk environment will be highly regarded.
You’ll also bring sound knowledge of WHS and workers compensation legislation and experience with workers compensation, injury management, and return-to-work processes. Experience in local government, construction, civil works, or another diverse operational environment would be an advantage.
Above all, you’ll be someone who can bring people with you; someone who can combine sound professional judgement with warmth, credibility, and a genuine commitment to helping people go home safe and well.
What we offer
The position is full-time with a salary of $100,000 to $110,000 per annum, depending on skills and experience.
Council also provides 18.5% superannuation, with the option to receive 6.5% as ordinary time earnings, providing flexibility to choose the arrangement that best suits your circumstances. Relocation assistance may also be available for the right candidate.
17.5% annual leave loading, plus the option, subject to approval, to purchase up to an additional 10 days of annual leave each year.
Three additional paid days of Christmas gratia leave between Christmas and New Year, without deduction from annual leave balances.
